Introduction to Beekeeping

Spring 2021

Class Dates: Ten Saturdays, 1.5 to 2 hours each class: 

February 6, 2021 through April 4, 2021. 

Seven Zoom meetings.  Two outdoor field days will include hive inspection demonstration in small groups.

Held on days with appropriate weather.  Masks, beekeeping veil or suits, and physical distancing required. 

Class Time: 1:00 to 2:30 pm (or 3:00 depending on topic and questions).

Beginning Beekeeper Course

A class for beginning beekeepers will be held in the Executive Auditorium of the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia, on Saturday, Feb. 27.

The class will start at 9 a.m. with registration and end at 3:30 p.m.

Topics covered in the class include honeybee biology, equipment needed, where and how to get bees, locating the apiary, honeybee pests and diseases, seasonal management, integrated hive management and nectar sources.

Every effort will be made to answer those basic questions that persons considering beekeeping will have, including equipment assembly, introduction of package bees to the hive, capturing swarms, inspecting the hive, etc. Please keep in mind the current situation regarding masks and social distancing per state guidelines.

The cost of the class is $35, and class size is limited.

Colonial Beekeepers has several classes coming up in the new year. As of now all of the classes will be held at the St. George Brewing Co. We are also working on a zoom session for those wanting to attend the class but would rather be at home. Times have not been set yet but separate events will be published with all of the specific details for each class. All classes are free of charge and are open to the public. Membership to CBA is also not required and all members of any of the local beekeeping groups are invited to attend.

Saturday the 16th of January, 2021 - Advanced Beekeeping - Swarm control, Supering, Splitting and Mite Control.

Saturday the 23rd of January, 2021 - Woodenware Workshop.

Saturday the 6th of February, 2021 - Basic Queen Rearing.

Saturday 13, 20, 27 March, 3 and 10 April - Basic Beekeeping Course.
